Bringing Society To Psychology
Excuse the shameless self-publicity but members may be interested to hear about this textbook on mental health and psychology. Aimed at undergraduates doing ‘abnormal psychology’ courses or other mental health-related courses and those training in the mental health professions, the book questions traditional reductionist approaches hidebound by categorical diagnostic classification. In contrast to the majority of other texts, the book tries to adopt a more sophisticated approach, covering debates about history, culture, biology, the causes of distress, diagnosis and formulation. The book’s chapter on interventions includes a section on community psychology written by Rachel Cox, Guy Holmes, Paul Moloney, Penny Priest and Mike Ridley-Dash. Other sections in that chapter include psychiatric medication by Joanna Moncrieff and psychological therapies by Paul Kelly and Paul Moloney (author of The Therapy Industry, Pluto, 2013). Peter Campbell, Jacqui Dillon and Eleanor Longden wrote the chapter on the service user movement and John read and Richard Bentall wrote the chapter on madness.
