CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Investigating therapists' perceptions of the importance of social class in therapy.

Hi all!

I am looking for participants for my research exploring the views of therapists, and therapists-in training, on the meaning and importance of social class in therapy, and the therapeutic relationship.

My name is Charlotte McEvoy and I am completing a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology in the Department of Health and Social Sciences, at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I am completing this research for my doctoral thesis.

Compared to other areas of difference and diversity, social class is given very little attention within psychology’s research, training and practice, despite it being a robust predictor of our life chances, physical and mental health. The existing research into social class within therapy has suggested that if class differences between therapist and client are not acknowledged by the therapist (particularly when the client feels they belong to a 'lower' social class) or if a client perceives their class-related struggles to be dismissed by the therapist, it can be damaging to the therapeutic relationship and therefore, the work itself.

I am looking to recruit anyone who is over 18 and a fully qualified and accredited counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist;

Or anyone who is currently completing an accredited training course, and has at least a year’s experience of working in a one-to-one capacity therapeutically with clients.

This research uses fully confidential and anonymous online qualitative surveys to gather data. Questions will explore participants’ views on social class in general and will ask them to draw on examples from their practice. The survey will take about 15 to 20 minutes of your time.

If you would like to take part, and therefore contribute to an important and barely addressed area of the literature, please click on the link below. Many thanks.
