Event Description

This workshop aims to provide a focus for researchers and practitioners interested in learning more about what Community Psychology stands for and what it involves. This includes inclusivity, social justice, improvement of health and well-being. The workshop will raise questions about how we might create a society based on greater egalitarianism, non-exploitation and respect for the environment in order to foster solidarity and interdependence.

The ethos of community psychology has never been more important than now, when it feels as if the world is in economic chaos and policy decisions will have far-reaching impacts on the most vulnerable and socially excluded members of society. The values at the heart of community psychology include those of inclusivity, social justice and improvement of health and well-being. The approach cuts across disciplines and member networks of the Society and encourages collaboration and partnership working with a range of stakeholders.

This workshop will outline theory and methods to enable applied psychologists to address such issues as: poverty; inequality; gendered violence; the construction of disability; insecure employment and unemployment; substance misuse and challenges to people’s mental health.

The workshop will raise questions about how we might create a society based on greater egalitarianism, non-exploitation and respect for the environment in order to foster solidarity and interdependence.

This workshop aims to provide a focus for researchers and practitioners interested in learning more about what Community Psychology stands for and what it involves.

Target audience This workshop is designed for psychologists, various health care professionals, those working in social work and social care, and people employed in community development roles.  No prior experience or knowledge about Community Psychology is required to participate in this workshop.

I'm devastated that I cannot attend this conference due to a group commitment I have. Is there any chance any of the presentations will be available on youtube? or powerpoint?

I hope it goes well, it sounds like a great day.

Kind regards

Sarah

Hi Sarah

Thanks very much for your kind comments and I'm sorry to hear you can't make it.  I'll check with my co-presenter, Ho, but I think we should be able to post some materials from the event on this website after the event has taken place.

Best wishes

Glenn

Hi,

It seems a bit ironic to me that a workshop on working with disadvantaged communities would appear to cost me £150 to attend!

I've worked in social care for many years and, though currently on benefits due to health issues, would be very interested in attending this event.  However, in my current circumstances, the fee is out of my reach.  Are there any places available to those on lower incomes?

Best regards

Luke

Hi Luke

Thanks for flagging this up for my attention. I wasn't aware of the fee structure for attending the event and this is helpful to know about this issue.  You've made a really important point and I'll be contacting the BPS CPD events office to see what can be done.  I'll see if they can add a concessions delegate fee to address the issue you've raised.  I tried to call them a short while ago but it looks like their office was closed.  Will chase it up tomorrow first thing.

Best wishes

Glenn

Hi Luke,

I've been in contact with the BPS Learning Centre and unfortunately there isn't an easy resolution to this situation in the short-term.  I have flagged up the problem of there not being a concessions delegate fee but this is not something that they can change at such short notice.

However, as mentioned to Sarah in her query (above) about the event, Ho and I will be able to put some of the materials on the Ning after the workshop has taken place.  It may be possible that we can re-run some of this workshop during the Community Psychology Festival in London, which I think it due to take place in November and I'm hoping attendance costs will be a lot less prohibitive for that event then.

In the meantime, I will be advocating for the fee structure to be changed for BPS Community Psychology Section-supported CPD events to have concession rates for the 2015 CPD programme onwards. When I was talking to the BPS Learning Centre colleague, she did say, however, that concession rates are still for BPS members as the CPD programme is heavily subsidised by the BPS and by some of its sections for the benefit of its members (such as the Community Psychology Section for the current event).  Members need to provide evidence to support their claim for a concessions rate.  There are, however, different rates for attendance and I notice that the rate you quoted was for the non-member rate. There are ways to get reduced rates for CPD event attendance.  If you're not a BPS member, it's possible to join for £10.00 per annum as an Affiliate e-subscriber member; this is the cheapest rate I could find to join and it would give you entitlements to join any Section or Division or Special Group of the BPS and to receive the benefits that come from joining.  Annual membership of the Community Psychology Section costs £10.00.  With the rate for this particular event with the Section member rate, this would be £48.00 including VAT.  This would be considerably cheaper than attending as a non-member and may be a way forward if you're thinking of attending Community Psychology Section-supported events in the future.

I realise that this does not help you in the short-term, but I hope the slides from the event will be of help and will then you can decide if you want to attend a revamped form of this session when hopefully Ho and I will be have a repeat of it at sometime in the near future.

With best wishes

Glenn

Many thanks indeed for your responsiveness, guidance, and commitment to advocacy on this.  I hope the event itself goes well and I look forward to hearing more about it in due course.
