Hello,

I have recently moved to Sydney having qualified from UEL last year.

I have been startled by the apparent lack of community psychology informed projects out here and the huge emphasis on private sector work. Although, I am new here so I may not be looking in the right places! I’ve joined a group called “De-colonising Psychology” of critical psychologists who want to make a difference to the system and to training. We met for the first-time last month and it seems that critical ideas are in their infancy in Sydney. From my understanding, Melbourne has more going on in terms of Critical and Community Psychology.

Anyway, I wondered whether anyone had any contacts, information or directions you could point me in for Sydney was I would love to get involved in such projects, as well as help the ‘Decolonising Psychology’ group connect with other interested stakeholders as we get the group off the ground!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Emma

Hi Emma,

I've just seen this at the same time as I got your message too. It sounds like you could make a real difference in Sydney which is exciting! I can certainly introduce you to the community psychologists I know in Australia. It's where I discovered it for the first time, ten years ago

in Melbourne, I'm jealous you're there!

Two quick things and maybe helpful for here:

Their big body outside of the APS is the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) - more US and AUS. http://www.scra27.org/ It's how I met a lot of people earlier this year, although they often tend to be more university based. I'm a member and recommend joining. As well as the SCRA conferences there is also the Trans Tasman where they bring together this work annually.

A national organisation I worked for called NEAMI used to do some great projects especially around community based peer support. They have roles in NSW too.

I've sent you my details

Speak soon N x

Nina!

Thank you so much for this response and for all those links. I've had a look at them and they're a great place to start. I'm definitely going to look out for the Trans-Tasman conference dates for next year, as well as the SCRA conferences.

I really appreciate it! I also read this after I responded to your other message and I have replied there too!

Hopefully we can chat soon,

Emma x
