Clinical Psychologists Working at a Macro-Level: BPS DCP Conference 2017

Community Psychology was at the centre of this symposium organised for the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology Annual Conference. I have attached the slides at the bottom for my talk and others will available soon for anyone who couldn't make it.

‘Clinical Psychologists working at the macro-level: learning, sharing and shaping the future of social and mental health policy’

Chair: Dr Sally Zlotowitz, MAC-UK and University College London

This collection of presentations will explore how Clinical Psychologists are influencing, creating and challenging national and international policy. The speakers will present ideas about action on the wider social determinants of mental health and reflect on career experiences relating to this work, as well as examine the skills, knowledge and resources required. As the future of the profession edges towards public mental health, social action and/or policy work, we look forward to sharing the ideas from those who are already doing this work now.

Presentations:

Richard Bentall (Unversity of Liverpool) will reflect on a career of influencing the policy around severe mental illness and the changes he has seen enacted and those yet still to come.

Jim Orford *University of Brighton) an eminent academic and Community Psychologist, will discuss his work trying to affect changes in the gambling industry and the UK government's gambling policy. Jim will explain why he chose to focus his attention on the harms of the industry, rather than treating individuals.

Nina Browne (Owls and UCL) will present the findings from Nina's doctoral thesis which qualitatively investigated the career experiences of 38 eminent Clinical Psychologists working at the macro-level, through policy and social action work. They will present the future implications and recommendations for training, research, clinical practice and the profession more widely. (Co-authours, Chris Barker, Sally Zlotowitz and Kat Alcock).

Sinead Peacock-Brennan (UEL) will describe her experience of the University of East London's DClinPsy's first policy placement with Nimisha Patel and Dave Harper. Nimisha and Sinead will describe some of the human rights policy issues this placement incorporated, including international policy level work.
