The First Ever Community Psychology Festival

The Community Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society is launching its first ever Festival in London on the 28^th and 29^th November 2014. This Festival is intended to be an accessible educational alternative to an academic conference, where public participation will be actively encouraged and supported.

Community psychology aims to bring real-world issues closer to the work that psychologists do, whether they are academics, researchers, or mental health professionals. Community psychologists work in the NHS, Universities, Charities, and many other contexts, and are united by their belief that healthy individuals are the product of healthy communities. They take a critical stance towards the medicalisation of human suffering and offer a much needed critique of its potential exploitation by those in power. 

The Festival will be a celebration of the works of community organisations and charities in their role to support well-being and promote social justice and community cohesion, and will largely be themed around issues related to children and young people. Participatory action research, public engagement, drama & music, as well as an ideas wall are some of the key features that will happen at this historic event.

The organising committee want the Festival to be attended by people that are unrelated to the profession of psychology. The reason being that they truly believe that community psychology can only be enriched, challenged and stimulated by the people it purports to help. At the same time, we hope to share best practice guidelines and interesting pieces of research with the general public. We welcome the presence of interested individuals whether they are involved in community work or not. Bursaries will be available for those on low incomes or who make use of relevant services.
