Event Description

Six months on from the release of 'The Five Year Forward View Mental Health: Mental Health Taskforce' this event aims to bring together representatives from across the community to examine the funding priorities, emerging innovations in treatment and latest thinking on how to deliver effective, patient-centred support to those with mental ill health.

Prevention, Early Diagnosis and Engaging with the Excluded
This event will discuss the emerging options to actively prevent individuals falling into mental ill health. Delegates will consider how best to educate people to manage their own mental wellbeing, the effectiveness of the Equal Opportunities Act 2010 in keeping people in the workplace and employed as well as ways to reach those who live with undiagnosed mental ill health before they reach crisis. The session will consider how to address the stigma that continues to affect mental health problems in ways that don't affect any other form of medical conditions and how to engage with specific groups - who often remove themselves from review - such as young men, new mothers and immigrants.

Access to Assistance: Patient-Centred Treatment, Innovations and Collaborations
The morning will examine the latest innovations in treatment, what 'patient-centred' services should look like and how best to respond to the needs of those with mental ill health. Delegates will consider the potential for technology - including telehealth - to cut the waiting times for those diagnosed with conditions to seek active treatment, the role of the third sector in delivering care and how to create services that can meet the differing needs of those with learning difficulties, long-term physical health problems, BAME communities and those with substance misuse issues. Discussions will also focus on ways to improve collaboration between primary, secondary and acute environments to ensure mental ill health is considered at the same time as physical injury.

The Mental Health Workforce: Supporting the Frontline to Deliver Care
In the context of the Five Year Forward View, attendees will consider the funding and workforce challenges facing the sector. Sessions will address whether the recommended £1bn additional funding is likely to transpire (particularly as research appears to show spending is 'lagging behind'), the challenges facing CCGs in the commissioning patient-centred and diverse services on a tight budget - exacerbated by an increase in the number of people diagnosed - and whether the medication approach delivers value for money to the NHS. A focus will also be on how to ensure mental health training is available across the NHS as well as how to support specialist care clinicians the necessary support to enact and deliver change.
