Event Description

The BPS North West Branch in conjunction with the Section of Community Psychology is pleased to announce that the next Psychs in the City event will take place on Wednesday 16th March at 6.30pm at Waterstones bookshop on Deansgate. Our speaker, Professor Rebecca Lawthom, will draw on a recent collaborative project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council which explores how people with the label of learning disabilities have fared under increasing austere times. Using a community psychological approach of working in partnership Prof Lawthom will discuss how we (as researchers and citizens) need to frame difference differently. She will also show what does work in the quest to remain humane.

Rebecca Lawthom is Professor of Community Psychology at the Manchester Metropolitan University, and Honorary Associate Professor of the University of New South Wales. She is also a member of the Research Institute for Health and Social Change. Her research interests include disability, migrants, community and feminist psychology. Methodologies include utilising qualitative participative methods that embrace marginality. She is a reviewer for a number of journals, and publications include the BPS approved book ‘Critical Community Psychology'.

I think you'll agree that the talk sounds extremely though-provoking and highly relevant in the current economic and political landscape. We are extremely pleased to welcome Professor Lawthom and hope you can join us for what promises to be a very interesting evening. There's no need to register, the event is free and refreshments will be provided. The event provides a great opportunity for meeting and getting to know other psychologists in the North West.

Hope you can all make it!
